Get Ready, the Total Solar Eclipse is Coming
On April 8, 2024, North America will be treated to one of the most amazing sights of a lifetime: a Total Solar Eclipse. The state of Texas is on the path to having one of the best views and the attendance boundaries of DeSoto ISD will offer students a safe, spectacular place to experience this moment in time.
It's an opportunity for hands-on learning and can inspire a lifelong interest in scientific exploration and promote interest and curiosity in science, astronomy, and the natural world. Therefore, the Teaching and Learning Department is encouraging teachers, students, and parents along with the entire school community to connect and learn about this experience.
The vision of DeISD is to inspire curiosity and consciousness, develop character, build courage, and nurture compassion for the students and that is what science does.
When Will the Total Solar Eclipse Occur on April 8, 2024?
- 12:20 p.m. - First contact
- 1:38 p.m. - Totality begins
- 1:40 p.m. - Maximum eclipse
- 1:42 p.m. - Totality ends
- 3:00 p.m. - Last contact
*Ideal time to be outside is between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.
How Will DeSoto ISD Mark this Moment?
- Each campus will have an event planned where students and/or parents can safely watch this occurrence. Please contact the campus for details.
The next total solar eclipse will not occur again until August 23, 2044.

- Measuring Air Temperature during the Eclipse
- Students will write a journal reflection on what they observe during the solar eclipse.
DeSoto ISD is Thankful for its Donors
- DeSoto ISD is grateful for the donations from the Dallas Perot Museum, a district education partner, who provided solar glasses to help support this student experience. These glasses have been distributed to campuses for use on April 8.
