The DeSoto Independent School District’s DeSoto High School End-of-Course performance in the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, shows progress on recently released scores.

STAAR measures academic performance based on state standards in five subjects: algebra I, English I, English II, biology and U.S. history. High schoolers are generally required to pass the exams in order to graduate.

According to scores recently released EOC scores, progress areas of note are as follows:

  • DeSoto ISD grew the number of students meeting state standards in Algebra I by over five percentage points, while the state remained flat.
  • DeSoto ISD grew the number of students meeting state standards in Biology by over two percentage points, while average growth statewide was one percentage point.
  • DeSoto ISD grew the number of students meeting state standards in English I by over five percentage points, while the state remained flat.

Students’ performance has shown some post-pandemic improvement noting the impact of the interruption to learning during that period which is also notable due to the recent redesign of the STAAR exam which now requires most students to take the exam online among other changes.

The Teaching and Learning Department will continue to use data to enhance learning experiences and align curriculum resources to ensure our students are meeting academic requirements to accelerate student outcomes,” said DeSoto ISD Chief Academic Officer Stephanie McCloud.

According to the Dallas Morning News, statewide results for end-of-course exams showed an increase in the percentage of students meeting grade level in English II, but a decrease in U.S. history, per the Texas Education Agency.

The above-referenced growth points are in regard to high school courses. Scores for elementary and middle school students will be released on June 14. The release date for district accountability ratings has not yet been specified by TEA. Parents and families can look at their child’s individual results by going to their school district’s family portal or TexasAssessment.gov and using the unique access code provided by their child’s school.
