DeSoto ISD continues to fulfill its mission of ensuring that all scholars achieve to their highest levels and announces the addition of a sixth-grade Pre-AP Honors Mathematics Pathway to its middle school curriculum for the 24-25 academic school year.

The sixth-grade honors (also called Pre-AP Mathematics) pathway aims to provide scholars with an accelerated, rigorous curriculum that builds a strong foundation of advanced math concepts and essential skills to equip scholars to better achieve in advanced math courses, meet the standards of STEM readiness in high school, and succeed in postsecondary learning environments such as college or universities, direct to the workforce, or military service.

Under Texas Senate Bill 2124, this pathway is a state-mandated initiative designed to service scholars who rank in the top 40% of the district's fifth-grade population based on specific academic criteria demonstrating excellence in mathematics.

The scholars who participate in this honors program are on an accelerated mathematics pathway that allows them to take Algebra I in eighth grade instead of ninth grade, making space for progressing through the upper-level, high school math courses like Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. These scholars will also be able to earn college credit through Advanced Placement courses while still in high school.

This opportunity is open to all incoming sixth-grade scholars and will be offered on all district campuses that service this grade level.

To prepare for the honors coursework and program entry, all incoming sixth-grade scholars must have a summer math packet and return it to the campus honors pathway teacher by August 19.
