Dear DeSoto ISD Families,

Welcome back to another exciting school year. I truly enjoyed seeing so many students and families at our campuses this week ready to learn and grow.

The first few days back in a school community can be challenging for everyone—from waking up on time, adapting to a new campus, and even following a schedule and locating classes. Despite any wrinkles that may have occurred the first few days of school, we are committed to receiving feedback and working to create an exceptional experience for our students and families.

We recognize that there have been several challenges regarding transportation this week, and we truly apologize for any frustration this may have caused our families.

Our team has been speaking with parents and campus staff regarding student arrivals and dismissals. As a result, we have noted two major areas of concern: bus operations and parent car traffic.

As a result, we commit to the following:

  • In order to improve bus operations:

    • All drivers will contact dispatch when their bus is empty and make themselves available for sweeping other routes to improve pick-up and drop-off times

    • Bus safety will be enforced by the First Student safety officer and district administration daily

    • The district will provide timelier responses to families in instances of delays or late bus arrivals.

    • Bus drivers will be knowledgeable of school start and end times to ensure students’ timely arrival.

    • Bus numbers will be visibly posted for easier identification (Please look for a number that begins with the letter “D”. Each route number begins with a D. Routes are numbers 1-70. Route numbers are displayed on the side of each bus.)

  • In order to improve parent car traffic:

    • Additional safety cones will be placed at campuses in bus lanes and traffic areas to better control traffic and improve student safety.

    • Staff supporting traffic and bus arrivals/departures will enforce the separation of parent traffic and bus traffic at campuses.

Here’s how our parents and families can assist us in ensuring that we maintain a safe environment when picking up and dropping off our students:

  • Remain inside your car and do not exit your vehicle.

  • Observe and adhere to lane assignments for buses and cars.

  • Observe and adhere to traffic directional rules, signage and protocols.

  • Exercise caution and patience so that students may exit safely and promptly.

We are aware that each campus drop-off and pick-up locations will look a little differently, so please ensure that you receive and adhere to campus-specific information.

This week and next week, our team will perform daily audits of bus operations to review and address any concerns including delays, interruptions to service, or safety matters.

Parents are encouraged to download the FirstView app to monitor bus routes and locations in real-time.

We thank you for your patience as we continue to improve our transportation services.

Sincerely,

Dr. D’Andre Weaver

Atentamente,

Dr. D'Andre Weaver
